Remembering Beaufort Artist Jenifer Crowell

Jenifer Scott Crowell, daughter of Christopher and Nancy Crowell, passed away peacefully February 11, 2022 after bravely battling late-stage melanoma.

Jenifer was born June 21, 1959, in Hempstead, NY. She spent her early childhood years living in Darien, CT. In 1974, along with her mother and sister, she moved to Martha’s Vineyard. While attending MVHS she immersed herself in the drama department, acting in many of the school productions. Jenifer also participated as an AFS exchange student in Sweden. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1982 with a BA in Theater and Fine Arts.

Jenifer’s passion was acting. She pursued a career in theater, television and film for many years in Connecticut, Chicago, New York City and North Carolina. She had numerous roles as a lead actress confidently and convincingly bringing characters to life and connecting with audiences.

Jenifer infused her creative spirit and passion into every aspect of her life. She was a singer, dancer, poet and a pianist. She offered acting and clowning classes, inspiring children and adults.

A graduate of Ringling Bros Clown College, Jenifer loved performing and spent many years clowning for Duke University Children’s hospital as the beloved silent clown named “Sky Blue.” She brought smiles to many children who looked forward to her visits with joyful anticipation.

In 2003, Jenifer settled in Beaufort, North Carolina. She focused on her art, creating colorful abstracts of ocean animals and local scenes from the Beaufort area. She showcased her paintings, greeting cards, and calendars at the weekly Beaufort Farmer’s Market and also offered face painting to the kids.

Jenifer loved the ocean and living by the water. She enjoyed her daily walks along with swimming, kayaking and sailing with her partner, Steve Thiele.

An avid tennis player, Jenifer participated in the USTA league, competing in singles and doubles matches for her team. She was adventurous and loved the outdoors, hiking many mountains in the California Sierras, Whistler BC, and the Blue Ridge Mountains in NC.

Jenifer loved animals, especially cats. She adopted many strays throughout the years giving them their forever home. Recently she worked with the Beaufort Community Cat Project helping rescue feral cats.

Jenifer will be remembered for her smile and her beautiful soul. She will live forever in our hearts.

Jenifer is survived by her mother Nancy Dilday Crowell of Rye, NH, and her father Christopher Scott Crowell of Placida, FL and her sister Stephanie Crowell Saltonstall (Thomas B. Saltonstall) of Rye, NH.
